The bigger the thighs, the less the chances of having diabetes. No, this is not some old housewife's tale but a medical study conducted by the Department of Medicine at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) in New? Delhi and Motilal Nehru Medical College, Allahabad.

According to Indian experts, a simple and cost-effective screening tool to identify people with possible high risk of Type-II diabetes, is to compare one's waist-thigh ratio to test for the same.

The study entitled, Waist-thigh Ratio: A Surrogate Marker for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Asian North Indian Patients — recently published in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism — was done on 1,055 patients at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital from March 2013 to September 2016, the hospital said in a statement released on Tuesday.

Dr SP Byotra, author and chairman, Department of Medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said, "Mere diagnosis and treatment of diabetes will be futile and uneconomical, unless we identify those at risk at an early stage. For this, we require simple and inexpensive screening tools that can be used easily, wherever and whenever required by the clinician."

Diabetes is a major concern worldwide but especially in South East Asian countries. According to the study, South East Asian diabetics may go up from 78.3 million in 2015 to 140.2 million by 2040 but what is greater concerns is the fact that an estimated half of them are likely to be undiagnosed.
