The popular Indian spice 'turmeric' has emerged as a 'rising star' on the recently published Google “Food Trends” report which is a compiled list of trends of food-related searches made in the US from 2014 to 2016.

Google analysed every food related search query entered on its search engine over the two-year period and compiled this data to gauge the US populations choices, interests, and behaviour.

The food searches were then categoried into six broad categories -- Sustained Risers, Seasonal Risers, Rising Stars, Sustained Decliners, Seasonal Decliners, and Falling Star.

Popular essential Indian cuisine ingredient, Turmeric emerged on the top of the 'Rising Stars' list.

Apart from this, turmeric was also called the 'Food with a function' for its many medicinal benefits and it was also the 'top trending functional food' the Food Trends report says.

The data compiled by the Google report shows that consumers were looking for videos on YouTube to understand the health benefits of turmeric.

These are the benefits that the videos threw up. It's intersting to note that turmeric related videos garnered 3.9 million views.

US is catching up to the Indian spice's medicinal benefits while it has been a part of every Indian grandmother's home remedies.

This is why turmeric topped the Google ''Food Trends'' list.

The ochre-coloured spice has an active ingredient called curcumin which can help treat a spectrum of dermatological diseases. A recent study observed that there was a significant improvement in skin health after the spice was taken in forms of both, oral ingestion and topical application.

It's anti-inflammatory, it can be used as an antiseptic. Turmeric is also used in face packs to check acne.

Medicinal properties of Turmeric

*Dermatological
*Anti-inflammatoral
*Acne
*General injury or skin irritation
*Alopecia
*Treating acute lung injury (ALI)
*Psoriasis
*Treating acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
*Facial Photoaging
*Tendinitis and arthritis

Another huge health benefit of turmeric is that it could help protect your body against cancer.  The Advanced Centre for Training, Research and Education in Cancer, in Mumbai, has been investigating curcumin’s potency to induce cell death, or apoptosis, in cancer cells, thus checking the rapid growth of malign cells from becoming abundant in the body.

A major breakthrough --

The only hiccup, a Business Insider article said, is the lack of bioavailability – a situation wherein the body does not readily accept the curcumin in enough quantity to make the spice successful in its effect. However, researchers are working on pairing the ingredient with various other fat solutions and nanoparticles to improve the uptake by the body and produce better results in cancer treatment.
