Neurologists and experts on Friday revealed that only 2% brain stroke patients get timely treatment in India compared to 25% in the US. They shared the information on the first day of the three-day-long conference organised by the Society of Neuro-Vascular Interventions SNVICON 2018, themed 'Strengthening Basis and Exploring New Concepts'.

"On a global level, two people suffer from stroke per second whereas in India 2 stroke cases are registered per minute. However, where globally 25% patients get treated in golden hours, the percentage of the same is 2-3% in India," said Dr Mukesh Sharma, Sr Consultant, Neurology.

"When it comes to effective stroke treatment, barriers like lack of awareness, inadequate infrastructure, poor access in rural areas and approach and time were taken by physicians often leads to complications. With this seminar, we hope to start a dialogue, where we work as a comprehensive team and help in the development of a straightforward and tactical approach for stroke treatment." He is also the organising secretary of SNVICON.

He said men were more prone to stroke than women. "Due to lifestyle habits male are more prone to the strokes. Also, 90% of the paralysis attacks are curable if identified and given timely treatment," added Dr Sharma

There has been a significant rise in deaths due to brain stroke among Indian patients in the past 10 years. A brain stroke, if not treated immediately, can lead to permanent disability, loss of voluntary functions, paralysis and death. Today, many neurovascular diseases can be treated without opening the skull through intervention treatment.

This minimally invasive method treats neurological diseases such as aneurysms by coiling, placing a stent in narrow blood vessels of the brain, removing the clot from blocked blood vessels and embolization of abnormal blood vessels of the brain.
