Blueberries have gained superstar status in terms of their unique health benefits. They are full of nutrients and are natural antioxidants that’s proven to fight cancer, lose weight, give you glowing young skin and the list never ends.

1. Fight signs of ageing

Collagen is the support system of skin that comes from Vitamin C and acts as an antioxidant in our bodies. Antioxidants are molecules that inhibit oxidation of other molecules and oxidation is a chemical reaction that leads to chain reactions that may damage cells. Blueberries help turn the damages done by toxins and free radicals. They smoothen wrinkles and improve the overall texture of skin.

2. Make the brain more efficient

Blueberries have high levels of phenols, specifically gallic acid which helps in boosting the brain functions. They are known as "neuro-protective agents." Some Iranian researchers say that they are called so because they protect brains from degeneration, neurotoxicity, and oxidative stress. 

Other studies found that blueberries slow down the cognitive decline and advance memory and motor function. 

3. Battle cancer

Gallic rich foods like blueberries can kill tumour without harming good cells, unlike radiation and chemotherapy, says a clinical study. The Journal of Biochemical and Molecular Toxicology published a study analysing that gallic acid has anti-cancerous effects on breast cancer cells. 

Blueberries are able to destroy the cancer cells because they are rich in gallic acid and resveratrol.

4. Improve digestion

University of Maine researcher Vivian Chi-Hua Wu stated, “Addition of wild blueberries to diet can alter the balance of gut microbe in favour of members of the Actinobacteria phylum.” The team found out that blueberries can stimulate growth of good bacteria and their soluble and insoluble fibres help regulate gastrointestinal tract. 

5. Benefit the heart

According to US Highbush Blueberry Council, the antioxidants in blueberries reduce the build up of bad cholesterol (LDL) in the walls of arteries and hence downs the risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The journal Circulation published a survey that said consuming strawberries and blueberries together decreases the heart attack risk up to 33%. 

6. Let your skin glow

The wide range of vitamins and minerals in blueberries help in regaining hormonal balance hence counteracts acne. They prevent the damages done by sun, pollution and also skin darkening. This is why blueberries are considered effective for skin rejuvenation. 

7. Help with weight loss

Blueberries are low in calories and low on glycemic index, the number regarding a particular type of food that indicates the its effect on a person's blood glucose level. Also, the high fibre content gives people who are willing to reduce, a big reason to consume it. 

According to Mayo Clinic, low glycemic index foods are absorbed slowly. These foods help in controlling appetite and delays hunger which can assist people in their weight management strategies.
