A teen reportedly suffered a stroke after a love bite from his girlfriend. Julio Macias Gonzalez started having convulsions at his dinner table in Mexico City and paramedics who arrived on the scene couldn’t save him, reports the Daily Mirror.

The incident reportedly happened due to a hickey given to him by his 24-year-old girlfriend who is now absconding. It appears that a suction of the hickey caused a blood clot that travelled to the brain and caused a stroke. This isn’t the first time an incident like this has occurred and in 2011, a 44-year-old woman was left paralysed after she suffered a similar stroke.

What is a stroke?

Also known as a cerebrovascular accident, a stroke is a medical emergency that arises when arteries that supply blood to the brain get affected. As a result, the brain doesn’t receive sufficient blood, and when the brain doesn’t get oxygen and nutrients even for a few minutes, it can result in paralysis or even death. There are two main types of strokes: ischemic stroke and haemorrhagic stroke. While an ischemic stroke is caused due to a block in the blood vessel, a haemorrhagic stroke is caused by bleeding through a tear in the blood vessel.

Normally, strokes can be prevented with a healthy diet, exercise and other basic lifestyle changes but sometimes freak accidents like the aforementioned are simply not preventable.
