Headaches, nausea, fatigue, dehydration and dizziness—the only thing worse that battling Monday morning blues is battling those blues with a hangover. Not to mention, spending most of the day googling 'home remedies to cure a hangover', and ensuring you eat right and drink litres of water or green tea. But at a recent launch of Dr Vaidya's: New Age Ayurveda, there seems to be a simple answer to a hangover crisis—a little capsule. And so, age-old ayurveda has been re-packaged to suit modern lifestyle. The result? The Livitup! - Hangover Shield. Simply put, it's "an ayurvedic hangover pill that doubles up as a long-term liver protector," says Arjun Vaidya, CEO and sixth generation Vaidya. Along with the hangover shield was also launched Herbofit, a multi-vitamin, energy and immunity capsule that revitalizes the body.

"Scientifically, alcohol in the body is converted into a toxic compound called acetaldehyde, which reacts with the brain, stomach and liver causing nausea, vomiting and headache—the hangover. In the long run, this compound corrodes the liver, leading to liver cirrhosis," said Vaidya. The capsule contains two main herbal ingredients: arogyavardhini ras—the ayurvedic liver toner that has the power to regenerate damaged liver cells—and kalmegh ghan, which has natural anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that helps prevent liver cirrhosis. These combine with lactose as a binder to make up a shield that "reduces the conversion of alcohol to acetaldehyde and leaves you feeling fresh the next morning, while simultaneously reducing your chances of liver cirrhosis in the long run," said Vaidya.

The retailing seems rather unconventional for a discipline that's been around for centuries. It is marketed through nightlife—restaurants, bars, clubs, pubs, lounges and wine shops—it is available online. The FDA-approved capsule will also soon be available at retail shops. "If you're having more than three drinks, taking two capsules before you drink should do the trick. But of course, each individual is different," says Arjun Vaidya.

We advise caution in every way, responsible drinking and of course responsible pill popping.
