that factors behind rampant C-sections include lack of proper medical infrastructure at a nursing home as well as trained nursing care staff.

"The amount of waiting, monitoring, unpredictability, the fine judgement calls at different parts of labour and lack of a proper nursing staff can all make a consultant opt for surgical delivery.

"At government hospitals doctors are rushed and have too many patients and, therefore, they often prefer C-section.

Private nursing homes do not have round-the-clock anaesthetist or a blood bank necessitating a planned surgery," says Dr Sengupta who heads the Maternity Care team at Sitaram Bhartia Hospital which is one of the few hospitals to have declared its rate of Caesarean sections on its website.

Dr Sengupta also emphasises on the need for skilled nursing care staff at hospitals to assist doctors with deliveries as well as the need to counsel parents on the pros and cons of Caesarean sections over vaginal birth.
