Your brain is a computer, and every behaviour that which you execute is influenced by a specific program running inside your brain, be it as simple as walking or as complicated as taking a major decision in your life. But what happens if this programming gets disturbed or becomes faulty? Just like your computer may crash due to erroneous programming, does your brain also stops working? Assuming that it does, is there any method to re-install that program, like a software engineer would do to your computer? The answer is yes. That’s exactly where ‘neuro linguistic programming’ comes into picture. Our expert counselling psychologist, explains some interesting facts about the ultimate brain programming language.

What is neuro linguistic programming (NLP)?

Dr Rashmi: ‘Neuro’ relates to our nervous system and the way our brain works. ‘Linguistic’ relates to language and the way we communicate with others. ‘Programming’ relates to using the power of language and the nervous system to bring about appropriate changes in behaviours and the results we desire. Together, NLP is one of the most advanced personal change and growth technologies. World over it has also been hailed as one of the most effective science of brief therapy.

NLP evolved by modelling the world’s greatest therapists Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir and Milton Erickson. The modellers understood how these people used language in specific manner coupled with other processes like anchoring, creating desired internal representations, metaphors, reframing so that the clients healed from their mental and emotional problems. On studying their language and other processes, researchers Richard Bandler and John Grinder (the co-developers of NLP) replicated similar results by simply using the similar language and processes.

Who all can benefit from NLP and how?

Dr Rashmi: NLP is useful for everyone who wants to improve his/her quality of life and desired goals, be it professional growth, personal success, habits, relationships, you name it. Once having learnt for self, NLP techniques can be effectively used to help others. The beauty and efficiency of NLP lies in its focus, that is on the mental software (the internal process behind the behaviour) and once a person makes an appropriate change in that software then only sky is the limit.

By appropriate use of NLP tools, a person can easily get rid of phobias, addictions, and dysfunctional habits, mental and emotional problems. A person can develop any new skill easily by using NLP tools. In terms of managing one’s inner states that influence a person’s behaviour, a person learns how to remain in resourceful states by maintaining the physiology and psychology of excellence. Almost everyone benefits by learning the tools of NLP because it teaches a person how to take charge of one’s own brain, own mind and how to align one’s mind and body to achieve the desired goals. Today NLP is being used in business organizations to enhance personal excellence, sales, influencing, leadership, motivating employees and others, negotiating, team working, improving learning abilities, improving productivity, and many more applications.

Most people who experience any mental or emotional ‘disease’ is because of the impoverished mental models they, consciously or unconsciously, create and live with. NLP uses the power of language convert these ‘impoverished models’ into more ‘complete’ model of the reality which then helps the person to overcome the ‘disease’ or emotional, psychological, and behavioural problems.

How is NLP used to program the brain?

Dr Rashmi: NLP allows a person to program his/her behaviour using language and by making changes in the person’s neurology. It is obvious that for any behaviour to happen, a person must have a mental program in the brain. And, the outward behaviour is a simply a manifestation of the program running inside a person’s brain. So, when the mental program is appropriate then the person’s behaviour and actions lead them to their desired goals and when the program is faulty the behaviours leads them nowhere.

NLP practitioners, who study the language of brain, helps the client discover their mental program and make changes in their mental programming. Where there is no software available (in the case of new learning’s/behaviours, values) the programme helps the client develop and install new software or behaviours and remove limiting belief. The process of consciously using language and nervous system makes NLP as one of the most powerful change and growth technologies today.
