Jagruti Jogani, a resident of Kemps Corner made her family proud as she donated kidney to her ailing brother. While there have been many instances where a sibling has helped the other with live organ donation, Jogani and Yogesh Thakkar's case is different as the siblings had undergone obesity surgery 18 months ago.

Dr Rajesh Kumar, nephrologist at Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital, Powai, said it is probably first of its kind surgery in the country. Dr Bharat Shah, director of Institute of Renal Sciences, Global Hospital, Mumbai said, "It is a unique case as both the donor and recipient underwent obesity surgery a year and half back. Usually a donor with obesity surgery history is rejected as the person falls under high risk category."

Dr Shah said both the brother-sister underwent obesity surgery to get rid of diabetes and hypertension. While the sister was lucky, Yogesh unfortunately had kidney complications. "Post-surgery, both of them got freedom from diabetes and hypertension and lost significant weight but Thakkar developed renal failure."

According to doctors, Thakkar was put on dialysis and advised kidney transplant at the earliest. Seeing the brother in pain, Jogani decided to donate kidney to him.

"She made us proud with her decision as her husband too is diabetic and has kidney problem. She herself was in high risk category but nothing stopped her from taking this decision," said Dr Shah. A month back, the kidney transplant happened and has been declared successful.

Explaining why most centers discourage a donor with a history of obesity surgery, Dr Shah said it increases the possible complications in anaesthesia and post operative phase.

"Technically it is difficult. The risk factor is very high if the donor and recipient has undergone a bariatric surgery surgery. Post-surgery, we need to be extra careful. At the time of transplant, Yogesh weighed 94 kg while Jogani weighed 96 kgs," added Dr Shah.

Before bariatric surgery Thakkar weighed 164 kgs and Jogani weighed 142 kgs. Speaking to dna, Thakkar, who is into diamond business said, "I feel lucky. This is my second birth. When doctor told me that I require a kidney transplant, we didn't know what to do. My mother and brother are also obese and were ruled out as a donor. My wife's blood group didn't match. It was then when my sister stepped in."
