Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is thinking out of the box in order to spread awareness about the MR vaccine. The civic body has roped in Maulvis, several other community leaders and school principals for the job. "The Maulvis will speak to the parents across schools and spread awareness about the vaccine," Kuldeep Arya, deputy municipal commissioner, said.

Principals of schools of four wards in south zone met on Saturday to discuss the matter. "We have spoken to the principals. A meeting with the principals of schools of the remaining wards will happen on Monday," added Arya.

The civic body has ten more days to reach its target. The MR vaccination campaign, that was originally meant for a month, has been extended by a week.

"While Ahmedabad district has achieved 65% of the target, Ahmedabad city has not reached 40%. We have identified areas and schools where minimum vaccination has happened," said Dr Gaurav Dahiya, Mission Director, National Health Mission, Government of Gujarat.

For the poor

Local leaders can reach out to the people staying in the slums and the Maulvis has encouraged the Muslims and spread awareness about the vaccine. We have called a meeting with the parents' association also," added Dahiya.

Elaborating the efforts made by the civic body, Bhavin Solanki, in-charge medical officer of health, said, "We are enforcing schools with the help of the education department. There are some private schools where the response is poor. Local community leaders and influencers have been roped in to spread the awareness message of the importance of vaccination."
