From the United Kingdom to China, countries all over the world are gearing up to celebrate International Yoga Day on June 21. In India, the fervour is picking up, with camps and workshops being planned across the country.

Not to be left behind, yoga institutes in Mumbai have organised some special events for the day as well.

The Yoga Institute, headquartered at Santacruz in Mumbai, is planning to have activities all across the globe on 21st. ‘’We have teachers all across the world, who have been trained from this Institute, they have been specifically told to conduct a special session for International Yoga Day," said the Institute’s Director Smt Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra.

And in Mumbai? “We are going to conduct various sessions across Mumbai, in more than 60 places,” she said. These include a special programme at Mantralaya and various Government departments such as the Nuclear Power and Customs departments. The Institute is also organising events at banks like the Bank of India and the Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) and schools like Jamnabai Narsee and Poddar International schools. Additionally, corporate like Siemens and Kiprosh too have approached the Institute to help them celebrate Yoga Day.

Established in 1918, the Yoga Institute  is credited as the oldest organised Yoga centres in the world, and has thousands coming in every day to avail the holistic benefits of yoga.

The Iyengar Yogashrayainaugurated in 2001 by Padma Vibhushan awardee BKS Iyengar, too has big plans, with their Yoga Day celebrations commencing two days early. BKS Iyengar was known the development of a unique style of Yoga, called ‘Iyengar Yoga’, which is now practised all around the globe.

On Sunday, June 19, the Yogashraya held two mega classes with all its students from all around Mumbai at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The Bombay Stock Exchange will see a special event for its stock brokers and staff on the evening of June 21– they will also be participating in a yoga class.

On June 21, the Centre is also conducting Yoga classes for the Indian Navy at four of their bases, as well as the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Additionally, they are also presenting a paper at the two-day International Conference on 'Yoga for Body and Beyond' organised by the AYUSH ministry at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi, on June 22-23.

Then there are some who have gone beyond restricting the celebrations for just a day. Yogacara is organising an International Yoga Week starting from Saturday June 18 to Sunday June 26, at its Bandra location.

On the cards are free Iyengar, Restorative and Hatha Yoga classes almost every day. On Sunday June 19, a music meditation Yoga Nidra was scheduled, to a gentle flute rendition of Raag Yaman, described as ‘an evening raga that improves sleep and induces a deep state of relaxation.’

On June 21, apart from the free yoga classes, a talk is to be held on ‘Health & Wellness Yoga: Mental, Emotional and Physical Wellness’, by Yogacara founder Radhika Vachani. Another talk by Bharati Malani, the founder of Waterline Skincare will be held on the subject ‘Skin, Beauty & Lifestyle: Being Organic In An Inorganic World’. A session of Vipassana meditation will conclude the International Yoga Day at Yogacara.

Other events in the week include a June 25 talk about ‘Mind Potential: The Habits of Stress Resilient People’, about management of stress. There is also a talk on June 26 about Ayurveda. The panel will have Dr. Hitesh S Chaudhari, Dr. Mangesh P Deshpande and Dr. Amol Kachare (all three hold MDs in Ayurveda) addressing specific health concerns such as rapid ageing, disease, pain and joint management, and emotional disorders.

Yogacara was founded in 2010 by Radhika Vachani, who quit a San Francisco corporate job to start an institute in dedication to Yoga guru BKS Iyengar, after she experienced the manifold benefits of Iyengar Yoga.

Wellintra, which provides personal Yoga trainers besides conducting regular Yoga classes in Andheri, has had requests coming in from companies to conduct workshops on the occasion of International Yoga Day, says founder Atin Dasgupta. Their workshops include teaching individuals how to do yoga during office hours, tackling issues such as back-pain from sitting too long.
