Red wine is known to provide a cure for diseases like diabetes, dementia, heart disease and hearing loss, but the health benefits of red wine cannot help people who are obese, say researchers.

Resveratrol, an active compound that is found in the skins of red grapes and cocoa, is an antioxidant that is produced by plants  and helps protect them from extreme environments and also blocks the effect of ultraviolet sunlight, infections and temperature changes.

According to research, that was published in the journal Diabetes, it was found that although test-tube studies had suggested that resveratrol had an effect on obesity, diabetes, high blood-pressure and blood cholesterol, it had no effect on 24 obese, but otherwise healthy men who participated in a research programme.

As per the study, that was carried out by the Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, 12 men were given high-dose supplements of the substance and 12 men a placebo for four weeks.

Over this period the participant’s insulin sensitivity, blood pressure, cholesterol, and resting energy expenditure were monitored and researchers found that there was an insignificant decrease in insulin sensitivity and no change in blood pressure, cholesterol and resting energy expenditure.

This research that was conducted contradicts previous data that showed that the life of lab rodents which included old, fat, and even diabetic mice could be extended by supplementing their diet with the chemical.

It was presumed that the chemical could work in the same way for humans.

One proponent of resveratrol, Dr David Sinclair of Harvard Medical School, had claimed that the chemical will eventually lead to the development of drugs that will enable humans to live until they reach 150 years of age.

Dr Sinclair and his team recently showed that resveratrol possesses potent anti-aging effects because it stimulates the production of a substance called SIRT1. The serum blocks ageing and disease by speeding up a person's cell energy production.
