I am finding it difficult to adjust in a new place. I feel depressed, what do I do? (Query)

I am a 20-year-old student and have just moved in to a new city for my studies. I don’t have many friends here and I usually feel depressed and uninterested in my studies. I also have this habit of spending a huge chunk of my money in the first half of the month and find myself deprived of cash in the latter half. This adds to my misery and regardless of how much I try, I am not able to become better at planning and organising. How do I bring myself to lead my life better and feel happier?

I am a 20-year-old student and have just moved in to a new city for my studies. I don’t have many friends here and I usually feel depressed and uninterested in my studies. I also have this habit of spending a huge chunk of my money in the first half of the month and find myself deprived of cash in the latter half. This adds to my misery and regardless of how much I try, I am not able to become better at planning and organising. How do I bring myself to lead my life better and feel happier?

Certainly, being miserable and anxious about your situation is not going to help you. Here are a few tips to make your life better.

Direct your mind towards constructive things

According to Charnita Arora, renowned happiness and well-being coach, ‘When one gets to spend a lot of time with oneself, one tends to think a lot. Trained thinking leads to self-awareness. Untrained thinking leads to self-consumption. So, it is very important to nurture one’s mind-time by directing it towards constructive exploration.’

Trying to do constructive things with your time can stop you from splurging.

Develop new hobbies

Other than focussing only on your academics, you can also make some time to learn a new hobby. ‘Developing new hobbies like: writing, gardening, painting, singing, dancing, yoga and so on, can be an amazing way to build one’s relationship with oneself.’ says Charnita.

Learning new things may seem daunting at first, but actually, you need just 20 hours of dedicated time to get somewhat good at something.

Give yourself a daily dose of motivation

Just like the sun needs to rise up every morning to brighten your day, you need to keep motivating yourself to stay happy and content.

‘It is important to give oneself a daily dose of motivation. It could be in the form of meeting new people, subscribing to energising YouTube channels, reading quotes by inspiring people or even maintaining an active journal of one’s own life/dreams journey,’ says Charnita.

Explore the city

‘You could also be creative with the city. Every week walk your way to explore a new part of the city. When you walk, you would discover its magical aspects. Once your mind becomes content and centred, it would be easier to use your day well,’ advises Charnita.
