Obesity is becoming a growing epidemic in India, as over 30% of the population, including children, suffer from pot-belly abdominal obesity -  when excessive amounts of fat around the stomach and abdomen build up, impacting one's health.

Consumption of food which predominantly has high trans fat, sugar and cholesterol levels, minimal physical exercise due to long hours spent working in closed spaces, as well as the consumption of alcohol and cigarettes, are some of the contributing factors.

Once a person's height stops increasing, his/her organs stop growing and only muscles can build up to an extent. The deposition of fat is the only cause that increases the weight of the body after that stage.

A person can be obese even if his body weight is within the normal range. “Normal weight obesity is the new epidemic in our country,” says Dr KK Aggarwal, President HCFI & Honorary Secretary General IMA who is also a Padma Shri awardee. “An extra inch of fat around the abdomen can increase the chances of heart disease by 1.5 times,” he adds.

Aggarwal warns that abdominal girth of more than 90 cm in men and 80 cm in women” is an indication that a person is vulnerable to future heart attacks. One should not gain weight of more that five kgs after the age of 20 years in males and 18 in females and one's weight should be monitored and reduced, after the age of 50, he says.

Apart from tackling obesity, the benefit of losing weight can help reduce arthritis pain, blood pressure and also uncontrolled diabetes.
