Google on Thursday celebrated the 109th birth anniversary of American anaesthesiologist Dr Virginia Apgar, who is credited for creating the 'Apgar Score' that determines the health of a newborn baby.

Here are some other facts about her

1) Virginia Apgar was born on June 7, 1909. She spent her early life in New Jersey, USA in a family devoted to music.

2) Severe medical conditions in her family led her to develop an interest in medicine and science.

3) She completed a residency in surgery in 1949

4) She was the first woman to become a professor at the prestigious Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) in 1949.

5) Dr. Apgar and her colleagues gave thousands of babies scores during the 1950s as rate of infant mortality in the US began to climb. By the 1960s, it had become the main shorthand form of recording a child's health - particularly in the first 24 hours of its life

6) She co-wrote a book in 1972 called "Is My Baby All Right?" which explained the causes and treatment of a variety of common birth defects.

7) She died in 1974
