Five city-based diabetologists have devised an innovative and comprehensive health score index, christened as 'Blue Index', to evaluate and monitor the quality of medical care rendered to diabetics.
The index also facilitates doctors to ascertain whether any change in the course of treatment for a diabetic patient is required and whether a particular factor attributing to diabetes and related health complications need to be properly managed.
The index is based on the well-established factors which need to be regularly monitored in case of a diabetic. There are 10 parameters in the index starting from A to H, with a score of 0-5 earmarked for each parameter. These include average blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, diet, exercise, follow-up, general health, habits, infection and its prevention, and jeopardy of treatment.
According to diabetologist Banshi Saboo, who along with four other doctors have developed the blue index, trained counsellors can check the medical reports and interact with the patient and award the score for different parameters.
"When the patient meets an overburdened doctor with the scorecard, he knows what kind of interventions or treatment is required for the patient. The doctor can then suggest measures which need to be taken to improve the score, which will improve the overall health of the patient. The index acts as an educational tool and also creates awareness among patients." he said.
Who developed blue index
The comprehensive index has been developed by five city-based doctors. It includes Banshi Saboo, Sanjeev Phatak, Dhruvi Hasnani, Dharmendra Panchal, and Padmanabh Jinjuwadia.
Research paper to be presented in the US
A research paper is being prepared on the blue index and how it helps the patients as well as doctors. It will be presented during the conference to be organised by the American Diabetes Association in June 2019 in San Francisco, California.
