Donor, recipient of first womb transplant recovering well

A day after the country's first womb transplant, the 21-year-old recipient and her mother who donated her uterus are both doing fine, said doctors at the Galaxy Care Laparoscopy Institute (GCLI).

"Both the donor and the recipient are doing fine. The donor is already taking oral feeds," said Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, medical director, Galaxy hospital.

In the second uterine transplant at the hospital on Friday, a 23-year-old woman from Gujarat received a uterus from her mother. "The surgery went well and it took just 7 hours for it to be completed," Dr Puntambekar added.

The hospital has received an organ transplant license for five years from the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) in the state. 

While the medical community is split about the ethical implications of the surgery, Dr Puntambekar and his team are ecstatic.

"We are proud that we have put Maharashtra and India on the global map. Uterine surgery is no longer just restricted to Sweden," Dr Puntambekar said.
