When Dr Gayatri Patankar, 44, walked out of immigration at Mumbai's International Airport, all she wanted to do was get home after her flight from Dubai. Towards the exit, a crowd of people were gathering around a middle-aged man on a wheelchair, and the anesthesiologist from Thane's Bhumkar Hospital quickly swung into action. "The man was limp and without a pulse. I asked his colleagues to help me get him on the floor. I tilted his head and started administering CPR," said the doctor. The incident took place on Sunday night between 11 and 11.20 pm.

The emergency kit available at the airport arrived which she used the defibrillator attached to shock the man's chest to resuscitate him.

When the first two attempts failed, she performed an emergency laryngoscopy to help the man breathe.

On the third attempt she was able to revive him. Once he started breathing, Dr Patankar gave him an injection of adrenaline.

The man, who she refused to name citing patient confidentiality ,was shifted to Seven Hills Hospital in Andheri and is stable.

While the doctor is receiving a lot of praise for her efforts she stresses on one thing: "It is important to include emergency CPR in every medical course. I am an anaesthesiologists, but since I was trained, I was able to help the man in need."
