Doctors warn, pregnant women infected by the dengue virus are at greater risk of premature birth, low weight newborns, especially in the second or third trimester.

Seropositive for dengue in pregnancy can create health issues for the mother and unborn child. According to reports, pregnant women infected with the virus must be monitored, as high fever could lead to contractions, pre-term labour and pre-term birth.

Excessive bleeding or loss of blood during delivery or within the first 24 hours following childbirth, are some of the complications dengue can cause during pregnancy.

Doctors urge women to take a blood test, in order to get the necessary treatment to avoid these serious complications. Doctors also recommend pregnant women take adequate fluid, as staying hydrated is important for maintaining embryonic fluid level.
