After trying for two years, Shashi Kumari, 38, is now a mother of three; she gave birth to triplets on December 4. Kumari, who hails from Dabua district in Haryana underwent IVF, after she was diagnosed with infertility issues.

“I couldn't have asked for more. I was desperate for a child and god has given me three,” the elated mother said. Kumari underwent C-section seven-and-half-months into her pregnancy due to medical emergency, and delivered two boys (both weighing 1,500 gms), and a girl (weighing 2,083 gms).

The surgery took place at the Asian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), New Delhi, which has seen two cases of triplets within 15 days. This takes the total to 10 cases in last seven years, at AIMS The hospital also saw the delivery of 20-year-old Suman (full name withheld on request) on November 22. From Koshi in Uttar Pradesh, Suman, conceived triplets naturally. Although the doctors were worried because of her young age.

“She was 19 years old when she came to us. The family was excited about the pregnancy but we were worried about the girl. Suman proved to be strong, and thankfully there were no complications in the surgery,” said Dr Anita Kant, head of department, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, AIMS. The triplets, two boys and a girl, were also delivered prematurely at six and half months, and weighed 1,100 gms, 1,300 gms and 1,400 gms at birth.

Triplet conception is a high-risk pregnancy. In most cases, triplets are diagnosed with deficiencies as they grow up.

Dr Anil Batra, Pediatrician, AIMS, said, “Because the babies were born prematurely and had low birth weight, the babies were kept under observation in NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). In such cases babies have a high chance of catching infection as their immune systems was very weak.”

Due to the high risks to babies' health, in most cases of triplets conception, medical experts say that more people opt for fetus reduction. “I have not seen any couple going for triplets for over seven years now. Couples opt for fetus reduction in the first three months of pregnancy,” said Dr Abha Majumdar, head of department, IVF Centre, Sir Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi.

Mothers carrying multiples are at a risk of premature delivery. Premature labour birth can lead to more health challenges for newborns. “Chances of miscarriages are very high. Premature delivery may result in mental and physical disorders in the babies,” said Dr Anuradha Kapur, Director and Head of unit, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Max, Saket.
