Going on a weight loss mission for a healthier body is not always easy, especially when consumption of processed junk food is so rampant. With all the packaged, processed foods that surround us, managing a regime and sticking to it is laborious and squeezes the joy out of the eating process. What if taking baby steps towards healthy eating can save you? Here’s how!

What is clean eating?

Clean eating is a realistic and long-term approach that takes you back to basic eating and changes your eating habits one meal at a time. It is not an approach where you need to sweat blood over every calorie that you’ve eaten or give up on a food group entirely. It is an approach that fortifies your eating habits – it targets at eating healthier, wholesome food groups and minimising the intake of the not-so-healthy food groups.  Clean eating is an experiential personal journey and here is my personal take on this food philosophy.

Opt for whole foods

This one is pretty straight – choose whole grains, lentils, dairy and vegetables over refined cereals, ready-to-eat meals, artificially sweetened juices and snack bars. Eat fresh, whole foods that are locally available for best results.

Opt for fresh produce

Fresh produce carries a power-packed source of heart-healthy fibre, vitamins and minerals, antioxidants, and these have innumerable benefits. Have multiple servings of fruits and vegetables, this won’t do any damage to your waistline.

Say no to processed food

Processed, packaged foods are full of sodium, preservatives, refined ingredients, artificial stabilisers and chemicals. These ingredients do no good; instead harm your body as they have minimum nutrients. Instead, make wholesome home versions of packaged products that have all the good nutrients that your body needs. If you are pressed for time, make sure you buy products that do not do much harm to your body. Here are a few diet food options to choose from.

Limit intake of fats, salt and sugar

  1. To clean up your diet, carefully consume refined sugars, fats and salt. Do not consume more than 6 teaspoons of refined sugar per day and keep a check on invisible sugars from sweetened products, bakery and packaged foods. Swap bad saturated fats for the good unsaturated fats and keep check on the usage. Here are 6 sources of good fats you need in your diet. Also, keep a watch on your salt intake. Here are simple ways to reduce your salt intake.

Listen to your body

Listen to your instincts and feed your body with the right nutrients. Giving your body the right nutrients will ensure a healthy mind-body relationship.

Read food labels

With our hectic lifestyles, it is almost impossible to say a complete no to packaged products. The supermarket is swamped with a variety of products; you need to judiciously pick the healthiest of them. Do not get fooled by false health claims, read the food labels and the list of ingredients carefully before you make your pick. Choose products that have less refined ingredients, preservatives and artificial sweeteners. Here’s how to read food labels the right way.

Practise mindful eating

Mindful eating helps you to connect deeply to everything that you eat. It helps you know the difference between when you are really hungry and when you are just giving in to one of your cravings. It prevents you from feeding your emotions and inculcates a habit of eating healthy as you put your mind to what you’re eating and the body’s response while consuming a particular food. Here are tips to master the art of mindful eating.

Health benefits of clean eating

Whether you are hoping to lose weight or just adapting to a healthy lifestyle, clean eating can make a huge difference. Clean eating is known to enhance energy levels, prevent your body from a lot of diseases and disorders, and improve your mental health and overall well-being.
