With increasing pollution, the demand for air purifiers has gone up in cities. Now, people can opt for a low-cost one that is affordable and extremely efficient too.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has been working on an air purifier over the last few years. The project was undertaken by SM Shiva Nagendra, Associate professor in the Department of Environmental and Water Resources Engineering, and some research scholars. Nagendra and the other research scholars are part of 'Air OK Technologies', a faculty start-up set up under the IIT-M incubation cell.

A leading daily reports that the low-cost air purifier developed by IITians is sensor-based and a cheaper alternative to the current range of air purifiers in the market. However, the price has not yet been set for this one.

This air purifier is a stainless steel one and works similar to a water purifier. The fan at the bottom sucks in the air and if there are pollutants, the air is passed through a multi-layered filter before it’s released.

The air purifier will be available in the market soon and very useful for people with asthma and respiratory problems. Hospitals van use them as well adds the report.
