Apple has introduced a tool called ResearchKit that will give medical research a boost as it will enable researchers to collect data easily from people’s iPhones. This can be a breakthrough as it will eliminate quite a bit of problems that they generally face during a research. For example, finding volunteers for their study. But by using the ResaerchKit with the HealthKit on your iPhone, medical research can benefit a great way since a lot of people already use an iPhone.

The University of Rochester and Sage Bionetworks created mPower, an app using ResearchKit to conduct research on Parkinson’s Disease. Other apps created are for diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, asthma and breast cancer. These apps are available on the App Store today onwards. ResearchKit will be available next month onwards. Since it is for medical research, it will be an open source i.e. everyone will have access to it.

Using these apps, patients can not only monitor their health and live a healthier life, but also volunteer for clinical studies. They can decide if they wish to participate in it, how their data is shared and even record their symptoms with a touch on their iPhone. For instance, a Parkinson’s patient can record their symptom on the iPhone by saying ‘ahhh’. They can perform tasks that are assigned by researchers for study that they are a part of very easily using this app.

According to Mike O’Reilly, MD, Apple, ‘To think that this device that you use to check your mail can be used to battle disease is simply amazing.’
