To tackle the rising number of cases of oral cancers in the country, the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) here has launched an online tutorial on oral cancer along with the Indian Dental Association (IDA). The tutorial called Oral Cancer: Suspection & Diagnosis is available for free on omnicuris.com.
Oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world. Of the global 3 lakh cases detected annually, 86 per cent are reported from India, where it’s the third most common cancer.
Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi, Professor, Head and Neck Cancer, Tata Memorial Centre, said, “Oral cancer is primarily caused because of use of alcohol, areca nut and tobacco, all easily available in our country.”
The tutorial discussed why oral cancer is a serious public health issue, how to detect oral cancer at early stage and ways to identify and prevent it, Dr Chaturvedi said.
Dr Ashok Dhoble, Honorary Secretary-General of IDA, said, “From the dental point of view, oral cancer can be prevented if the patients visit dentists for treatment at the preliminary stage.”
Experts hope that the tutorial can aid healthcare workers in rural areas, who can access it online and learn how to detect oral cancers at a preliminary stage.
