Hair extensions are an option if you want to add up some length or volume to your natural hair texture. These can be custom made as per your hairstyle and cut, colour and the length that you are looking for. Here is some basic know-how on hair extensions.

Methods of application

There are several methods of application offered in the market – clip-on, braiding, weaving, bonding, seamless and strand by strand. Technical director at Juice Salons and Academy (Mumbai) Ambrin Feroz explains, ‘Clip-on extensions can be attached and removed on daily basis, while the tape-in extensions include a small seamless weft of hair attached to your natural strands with a double-sided tape. These can last you up to 2-4 months. And the sew-in or weaved type are attached to the hair with thread; one should not wear them for more than 2 months.’ However, the longevity also depends on the material you opt for.

Materials available

Synthetic and natural are the two basic types of hair extensions. The synthetic type may turn worn out with excessive styling; these are commonly used in the clip-on type. Human hair is always a preferable option as these are natural looking and are easier to handle and style. If you style your hair often, it’s best to choose human hair in semi permanent or clip-on type hair extensions.

Maintenance

As for maintaining the temporary ones or if you are using them only occasionally, Ambrin suggests, ‘It’s important that you always shampoo and condition before storing and usage. If you are a regular user of extensions then I recommend you wash and condition them every  3 days, this helps keep your hair extensions hydrated and moisturised. In short, one must take care of their extension just how they take care of their own hair.’ Hydrating shampoos will help your hair extensions last longer. Find out if you are washing your hair the right way.

Also, fix your hair maintenance appointments at regular time intervals, so you they stay intact. For an ‘on-the-go’ tip, use a brush with wide tooth bristles and tie your hair up into a ponytail to avoid breakage. Don’t forget to de-tangle your hair before you go in for a shower. Similarly, to make the most of your night time hair care, use silk pillow covers to keep away from static reactions with your hair.  Hair extensions could also be a way to hiding your balding or hair loss problem.

Professional guidance

Here is why you need some professional help during your hair extension procedure, Ambrin explains, ‘Selecting the right kind of hair extension is very important, there are various methods to choosing/wearing and storing it, seeking professional advice is a must as your hairstylist can help you through the process and teach you how to wear them. Besides, professional advice is given on how you can maintain your hair extensions better and above all, it helps you spot the difference between real hair and synthetic ones.
