If you have ever gone to a yoga class, you will be aware that  you need to breathe in a specific manner through each pose, maintain the posture throughout and relax with a counter pose. That ‘aah!’ feeling after the 60-minute power-packed yoga session is unmatched. But what happens after you get off the yoga mat and hit your daily routine? Do you remember to observe your breath and be mindful of your posture? Feeling at peace in a yoga class around like minded people is easy, but carrying the state of tranquility all through the day can be a challenging task. Yoga expert Akansha Jhalani tells us ways to practice yoga off the mat and make it a way of living.

#1 Connect with your breath: Breathing is so involuntary and continuous that we barely notice its power. Your breath can be a very powerful tool to connect with yourself and get deeper into your spiritual practice. Breathe mindfully and every now and then concentrate on your breathing pattern. Observing your breath will help you stay at the moment, and it is oh-so relaxing. Even when you are stressed, just take a deep breath and you will instantly feel much better. Try ujjayi pranayam– a breathing technique that helps you beat stress.

#2 Become aware: Awareness is a deep level of understanding of oneself and one’s surrounding. Staying in the moment and alert is important, but takes effort and practice. Start by staying positive and being open minded. Think before speaking and be a good listener. This practice will help you stay peaceful and also connect with others. This is real yoga—no mat required.

#3 Check your alignment: Your posture determines your state of mind. Your body alignment is important on the mat as well as off it. Try and keep your spine erect throughout the day. Maintain the correct posture to ensure that stress has minimum side effects on your body, and you become less subjected to discomfort and injuries. This yoga asana can strengthen your spine and improve your posture.

#4 Fix your diet: Diet is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Your diet is what determines your energy levels and your state of mind. You do not have to be a vegan or a vegetarian or switch to some yogic diet. All you have to do is eat healthily and eat mindfully.

#5 Care for yourself: The reason you feel good and relaxed after a yoga session is because you took out time out for yourself. Even if you do not have the luxury to roll out your mat and practice every day, take a couple of minutes out to do something that you love. You will feel a lot relaxed after a day long’s work.

#6 Let go things that pull you down: Try and let go of things that are not doing you good. We hold on to a lot of unnecessary things and feelings that only pull us down. Let go and detach yourself from this and say hello to a more positive life!
