Many working people are so focused on trying to get the job done that they compromise on their personal health. Fast food and energy drinks loaded with sugar become your staple diet due to stress and lack of time. Exercising stops becoming a part of your daily routine.

Daniel Wei-Chen Hong, a neurosurgeon turned businessman writes in entrepreneur.com that these lifestyle changes can lead to severe health problems like a stroke which occurs when the blood flow to an area of the brain is cut off. Yet, people are usually uninformed about the seriousness of the problem which makes stroke one of the leading causes of death.

Although a lot of factors that contribute to a stroke such as age and genetics can't be changed, there are some factors that are easily controllable. Dr Hong gives the following tips to prevent having a stroke while at work.

1. Walk your meetings

Sitting in a conference room for hours can be taxing and stressful. Instead, schedule walking meetings which will not only improve your health but also your relationship with your colleagues. Dr Hong cites a study which said that walking meetings tend to be more productive as "our brains are more relaxed during walks." Also, if you walk, it can contribute to the 150 minutes of recommended exercise which is a must for maintaining a healthy weight and lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

2. Let go off fast foods!

The fast paced environment of the office may not always let you have enough time to think about the nutritional value of the food that you are consuming. Office goers usually choose convenience over nutrition but eating foods that are low in saturated fat, trans fat and sodium, yet high in fiber can prevent high cholesterol and blood pressure.

To eat more healthy at work, take time on the weekends to make your meals for the upcoming week. Switch to healthy options such as sliced fruit and vegetables and smoothies and keep it ready to go so you aren't tempted to eat the fast foods.

3. Get enough sleep

While meeting deadlines and prepping for meetings is important, it should be done without compromising on your sleep. Studies have found that a healthy diet along with enough sleep and regular physical activity reduces the risk of stroke.

A BBC study found that even one extra hour of sleep can make you less forgetful and more alert. Also, genes associated with stress, diabetes and cancer were found to become more active in people who sleep less.
Therefore, make sure that you don't lose out on your sleep!

4. Monitor your health

Get regular checkups to keep tabs on your heart rate, blood oxygen level and overall cardiovascular health. This will help you detect symptoms of serious diseases early on and reduce the chances of advancement of the same. A lot of office-goers are overworked and neglect their health. Don't be one of them and take care of it before it gets too late.
