The prostate is a small but important gland in the male reproductive system. It surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside. As the prostate gland enlarges it tightens around the urethra, and may trigger urinaration difficulties. This condition is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

The incidence of BPH increases with rises with age, By 60, more than 50 per cent men develop BPH, and by 85, the chances rise upto 90 per cent.

BPH should not be confused with prostate cancer. However, both BPH and prostate cancer may develop with age and coexist.

Symptoms are bothersome, and have a negative impact on social life, personal relationships and sex life.

A simple blood test and medical checkup can diagnose BPH. PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) levels, an enzyme secreted by prostate may help to distinguish between BPH and prostate cancer.

If left untreated, BPH may lead to complications like urinary tract infections and kidney stones. It can also lead to stopping of urinary stream, a condition known as acute urinary retention.

Early detection of prostrate illnesses is poor mainly due to patient's hesitation to discuss symptoms. Family history helps in early detection and lifestyle modification can play a pivotal role in treating the condition. A good diet and moderate exercise helps maintain a good prostate health.
