Seems like gold metallic gowns were among the highlights of Britain’s biggest night for film. Colour was seen on Penelope Cruz, who wore a structured maroon dress by Giorgio Armani Prive and jewellery by Chopard; Bond girl Naomie Harris wore a yellow gown by Gucci and The Help’s Best Actress nominee wore not only a bright salmon dress by Valentino, but it was made of recycled bottles, the first eco-dress for the Italian label.

Other stars to go “green” in their clothes included Colin and Livia Firth, who accepted the Green Carpet Challenge to the industry’s luxury labels and wore Giorgio Armani and Paul Smith, respectively.

Actress Michelle Williams surprised everyone by wearing bespoke gown by high street retailer H&M, which she accessorised with a book-bag clutch of The Misfits by Henry Miller by designer Olympia Le-Tan.

Bafta Best Actress winner Meryl Streep and Christina Hendricks both wore black Vivienne Westwood gowns.

White was also a winner for many of the starlets, including fashion forward Scottish actress Tilda Swinton — nominated for Best Actress for We Need To Talk About Kevin — in a statuesque Celine gown, new Bond girl Berenice Marlohe in Dior and Bridesmaids star Kristin Wiig in strapless Alberta Ferretti.
