You have seen Buffy on television so good vampires and bad ones will not appear surprising. Neither will the romance between vampire and human seem unlikely. Twilight is definitely not a memorable film, there is no overt technique to commend and nothing beyond the ordinary to recommend. Yet it’s quite fascinating.
Stephenie Meyer’s novel, which was adapted for this film, is basically an evil encryptedromance about a good vampire Edward Cullen(Robert Pattinson)wholusts for the blood of Bella Swan(Kristen Stewart). It’s a strange fascination that turns the vegetarian vampire(‘cos he sucks the blood of animals not humans) into her protector- one who eventually vanquishes the evil that has been stalking Bella since their coming together.
Catherine Hardwick’snarrative has a strangely compelling tone. Angsty rock songs, Elliot Davis’ hand-held camerawork, a pathos-ridden voiceover, moody washed out colors and contained performances add a great deal of weight to the low-on-logic plot. The patchy special effects and the unimaginative make-up though, stand-out like an eyesore. Crisp editingand evocative framing give the film a mesmerizing effect, a tension that draws you in and holds you captive for the duration of it’s runtime.
