Review: 'Desi Boyz' is a classic mindless comedy

Film: Desi Boyz

Rating: **1/2

This film is a nightmare for the thinking audience. People who are used to world cinema, parallel cinema or intellectual cinema will squirm in their seats as some of the critics did when we were watching a press show of the film. But they are not the audience this film is looking for.

The average pop-corn munching and coffee drinking crowd looking for some weekend fun for two hours, after a hard week’s work, will like this film. It’s simple: you don’t need to think or ponder, just go there, watch John and Akshay engage in some serious bromance and watch John Abraham throw out dialogues like “Main Jerry (Akshay Kumar) ke liye ek baar nahi, sau bar galati karne ke liye taiyyar hoon.” No it doesn’t move you, doesn’t make you emotional or even engage you in any manner. This film will begin and end like the tub of pop-corn in your hand.

The idea of a bromance has been handled with kid gloves earlier and it’s no different even this time. Akshay Kumar again plays a good-for-nothing chap (after Housefull) who does odd jobs to look after a small kid (this is the only emotional high point in the film) while John plays a banker. Recession strikes and both of them land up being a stripper. You should not ask why and how, because for films like these, questions like these are banned.

Deepika carries herself well as the narrator and then as the girl-friend-in-shock after seeing her fiancé strip-dancing at a party. Chitrangada Singh makes her appearance only after the intermission. She looks a little uncomfortable with Akshay especially when they do a salsa number together. When she uses this sexy salsa dance and then an offer to strip to make Akshay learn his Economics lessons, one would feel that their college lives have gone to waste.

After all, what’s the use of learning a subject if a ‘hotness’ like her says ‘Tumhare har sahi answer ke saath main aapne ek kapda utaar dungi.’ Of course, Akshay gets the answer wrong when the last layer was supposed to be taken off. Smell the coffee, this is Bollywood and there won’t be any nudity in spite of the ‘A’ certificate.

The dialogue writing is one of the plus points in the film. Actually, it’s the dialogue that makes Sanjay Dutt look so good. The dialogues make the audience laugh at times and at times, draw your attention to Sanjay Dutt who has tried every trick in the style book to hide his ever-bulging paunch.

Lastly, the acting of John and Akshay. They haven’t done much. They were required to look good and deliver all the dialogues with a straight face. They have done this job well.
