Review: 'Sadda Adda'
Film: Sadda Adda (U/A)
Cast: Karan Sharma, Kunal Pant, Bhaumik Sampat, Robin Robert, Rohit Arora, Parimal Alok, Shaurya Chauhan
Director: Muazzam Beg
Rating: *1/2

‘The only thing that will stop you from fulfilling your dreams is YOU’.

The credits open with this line and the audience is given an idea of what to expect. We are introduced to six young boys, Sameer, Kabeer, Safal, Irfan, Rajat and Jogi, who hail from different backgrounds, but have made Delhi their home. As they struggle to find a footing in their careers, they’re almost always making merry in their posh duplex that looks nothing less than the garbage truck that passes by your home every morning.

You’re immediately reminded of last year’s MCP comedy Pyaar Ka Punchnama.

Sameer is a theatre artist, Kabeer an MBA graduade looking for a job, Safal in pretty much asafal in his civil exams, Rajat aspires for a ‘white collar’ job in Amreeka, Irfan is an architect and Jogi is a dropout and supposedly too young to join the grown up boys in their many escapades.Director Beg follows a set pattern. They all start as happy-go-lucky, beer-guzzling chaps, then become miserable as tragedy befalls each one after another, and finally emerge victorious. However idealistic it may sound, credit cannot be taken away from Beg for extracting a few chuckles every 30 minutes.

With Sadda Adda, Beg proves that to make a film all you need is a bunch of guys with decent build and a big house. The traditional story and aesthetics like camerawork are secondary afterthoughts. Love is when wannabe girls play tennis at a tennis court outside the boys’ pad and conflict is when one roommate rehearses play dialogues loudly enough to disturb the one studying for an exam.

As a whole, Sadda Adda doesn’t work, oscillating from mildly entertaining to superfluous as most points. Beg also resorts to needless bickering and preaching (on Islam and Muslims) every now and then.

In terms of acting, Karan Sharma as Sameer makes an impact, while most others are strictly okay. Female leads Shaurya Chauhan and Kahkkashan Aryan need lessons in how not to look horny all the time.

The boys are a fun lot but not fun enough to keep you entertained throughout. Skip this adda and pick up a DVD of Pyaar Ka Punchnama instead.
