'Norm of the North' review: Even the kids won't sit through this one
Norm of the North

Film: Norm of the North
Director: Trevor Wall
Cast: Rob Schneider, Heather Graham, Ken Jeong, Bill Nighy, Gabriel Iglesias
Rating: *1/2

What it's about

An evil builder wants to build luxury condos in the Arctic. Ironically, the man's name is Mr. Greene. The place surprisingly sees more tourist action than one would imagine, and while the tourists can't understand Bear, polar bear Norm does understand and speak Human. When his good intentions come to naught because he's so different from the rest of the animal kingdom, his father, the self-styled King Of The Arctic, would rather have him welcome the tourists than scare them away. So, with the wisdom of talking bird Socrates and his trusty lemming minions to help him through, Norm hitches a ride to New York to convince Mr. Greene that humans living in the Arctic is a really bad, bad idea. Easier said than done?

What's hot

The intentions, surely, must be lauded. Global warming, melting polar ice caps and the gradual disappearance of glaciers and icebergs is a very real phenomenon. The voice cast is definitely a well-lauded comic bunch and they're very good at what they do.

What's not

A polar bear who's different and has lemmings for minions? Haven't the makers of this film and the writers heard of Happy Feet? Of course, that had penguins, but you catch my drift, surely?

The whole premise of this film is so harebrained, it might actually end up doing more damage than good. It's almost as if a child wrote this and some adult thought it would be a great idea to make this into a film. Hell, one of the writers might even have been watching Krrish, for all you know. Just brave this film and you'll know why I'm saying that.

And, hey, don't even get me started on the animation. In this day and age, if you're going against the grain with your artwork, at least don't let it resemble something the 90s rejected.

What to do

Even the kids won't sit through this one. The film has far too few good gags to even merit one sit-through of this film. Do yourself a favour and... well, you know what to do.
