Music Review: Shamitabh

Album: Shamitabh
Director: R Balki
Music Director: Ilaiyaraaja
Lyricists: Swanand Kirkire, Kausar Munir
Rating: ***1/2

In their third collaboration together, R Balki and Ilaiyaraaja have worked on the music of Shamitabh. This is the 999th album of Ilaiyaraaja's career and it definitely has that distinct mark of the music maestro - subtle and inviting.

Ishq-E-Phillum - An ode to movies penned by Swanand Kirkire and sung by Suraj Jagan, the song has a distinct start with the piano, and continues with subtle percussion, never overwhelming you. Suraj Jagan hooks you with the raw/rockstar-ish voice he is known for.

Lifebuoy - The classic jingle is revisited by Suraj Jagan. It grows on you slowly and then it is hard to shake it off!

Thappad - Again sung by Suraj Jagan, who has Earl D'Souza for company. Trust Swanand Kirkire to bring your attention to the extraordinary aspect of common things like a soap or the advantage of slapping someone. Just a simple hand is all you need and you are armed!

Sha Sha Sha Mi Mi Mi - Sung by Caralisa Moteiro and penned by Kausar Munir, the song fails to impress in the crowd of songs dedicated to movies.

Stereophonic Sannata - Shruti Haasan's crooning stays with you to fill up your 'Stereophonic Sannata'.

Piddly - Ilaiyaraaja puts megastar Amitabh Bachchan in the recording booth for this song, which was the first one released from this album. The music subtly encases Big B's earthy voice. Breezy, fluffy, yet a song that is advising you to let go of all things piddly.

Verdict: It's a soundtrack you must listen to if you love the talkies.
