Movie review: 'Wild Card'

Film: Wild Card

Movie review: 'Wild Card'

Director: Simon West
Cast: Jason Statham, Milo Ventimiglia, Stanley Tucci, Dominik Garcia-Lorido, Michael Angarano
Rating: **

What's it about:

A compulsive gambler but loyal friend to those who need him, Nick Wild gets involved in bloody revenge, while offering to escort and protect a self-made millionaire.

What's hot:

Statham being Statham. Doing what he does best. Tucci just killing it in a brief role as  Baby, the baap of Las Vegas. And looking sharp while doing it.

What's not:

Based on the William Goldman novel Heat, Wild Card is guilty of just playing it too safe and sticking too closely to the original 1986 adaptation rather than trying out new tricks. But it's a Statham film, you say. But we're missing the chases. We're missing the short banter. We're missing a credible villain. We're missing thrilling fight sequences (you can never have enough). The humour seems forced at every point. The screenplay is a little weaker than usual. The scenes linger in places they don't need to. Really, so much more could have been done for this film!

What to do:

The poster looks more exciting than the film itself. Predictable is a word I'd pick to describe it. But that would be predictable, right? So, don't be surprised... I'll leave you with that.
