'Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation' Review: A lethal combination of action, visual effects and Tom Cruise
Mission Impossible

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Cast: Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin, Ving Rhames, Jeremy Renner, Rebecca Ferguson
Rating: ****

What's it about:

Ethan Hunt has just pulled off another "impossible" mission, barely surviving with his life after hanging off the side of a cargo plane during takeoff, even as he goes about saving the day. That, apparently, isn't enough and his agency, the IMF gets dissolved and the CIA takes over. Ethan goes deep cover and once he resurfaces, it's in Vienna, Austria. He's trying to prevent an assassination, while tracking down Lane, a man he knows little about and his band of secret operatives known as The Syndicate.

Except Lane proves near-impossible to track, forget killing. He gets some help with a disavowed rogue agent, but will it be enough to save the world yet again?

What's hot:

Tom Cruise is the lynchpin of this enterprise. Without him, this franchise won't have quite the same edginess. It also helps that he has a stellar supporting cast and a effectively minimalistic hands-on villain in Sean Harris. The man is menacing enough without being in combat. Rebecca Ferguson as Ethan's possible love interest is spot-on (can we have her as a Bond girl in the next film, please?) spectacular in her fight scenes. And yeah, the action scenes are superbly choreographed, the visual effects brilliantly crafted. Fans of the franchise will not be disappointed, for sure.

What's not:

Alec Baldwin's character (he plays the CIA director) might as well have been played by a lesser known face. He has most of his scenes with Jeremy Renner, who just steals every scene he is in. Also, the film tends to teeter on the fantastically impossible and one's suspension of disbelief only stretches so far.

What to do:

This well-balanced entertainer is a visual treat. Cruise is a delight to watch - even as he indulges in the same shtick in all the M:I films (a tad bit tiredly this time, it seems). And whatever you do, don't miss the beginning.
