'Idhu Namma Aalu' review: This Simbu-Nayanthara rom-com is painful to sit through
Idhu Namma Aalu review

Film: Idhu Namma Aalu
Cast: Simbu, Nayanthara, Soori, Andrea Jeremiah
Director: Pandiraj

What it's about

Idhu Namma Aalu is a movie that has been long in the making and after a much delayed release hit theatres on May 27.  Directed by Pandiraj, it's a breezy rom-com that takes us through a young couple's relationship. Siva (Simbu) works in an IT company in Chennai and his idle schoolmate Soori lives with him. His father starts looking for a girl so he can tie the knot and ends up finding Myla (Nayanthara). Siva falls in love with her at first sight but finds that Myla has a mind of her own. He thinks she is a CB-CID officer and lawyer rolled into one while she thinks he might be a Casanova. In comes Priya (Andrea) who was Siva's ex-girlfriend. Who is Siva in love with? Whom does he finally marry?

What's hot

Director Pandiraj is known for his sensitive portrayal of issues and in this film it seems to be about love between a young couple. Simbu and Soori have many fun one-liners that evoke laughter. In fact, Simbu takes a dig at himself throughout the film. For Simbu and Nayanthara, playing Siva and Myla is a cakewalk. The movie also doesn't have too much drama as it just focuses on these two people. Soori is the much-required comic relief in this film and he's done a good job. Adah Sharma in the special number adds some life to the film as well.
Simbu's brother Kural makes his debut as music director and the songs are not too bad. Simbu has sung a few while T Rajender has sung the Mama Waiting number.

What's not

Idhu Namma Aalu is touted as a rom-com but it is painful to sit through. The story is just very old wine in a hollow new bottle and there's no exciting twist in the story. Most of the second half of the film is just the conversation between Siva and Myla. And here the director has used every possible emoji to express the actors' feelings and appeal to the youth. The romance between Siva and Myla is more boring than exciting and one wonders why filmmakers don't know a thing about present-day romances, except that they talk for hours on their mobiles!

In some scenes, Simbu looks slim but it's quite evident that the actor drastically needs to reduce weight.

What to do

Siva and Myla's love story may appeal to the youth but to put in the director's language, we found it *insert expressionless emoji*
