Film review: 'Ouija' has a few genuine scares, but they are too few

Film: Ouija

Director: Stiles White

Cast: Olivia Cooke, Ana Coto, Douglas Smith, Shelley Hennig, Sierra Heuermann

Rating: **

What it is about: Teenagers mess with an Ouija board to try and contact a deceased friend. If you think that's something you'd see on YouTube than a theatre, think again. Hasbro, creator of Ouija boards has produced a film that scares you enough to not want one and fills in horror movie tropes enough to not take them seriously either.

What's hot: To be fair, the film does have a few genuine scares, but they are too few.

What's not: Is there anything we haven't seen before? After exhausting every cliche in the book, it hopes to bank on two things you'll take away from this film: the expression 'Hello Friend" and a fear of looking through that Ouija pointer thingie. And you have got to ask a question (possible spoiler alert). Why do these idiotic characters take the word of someone committed to a mental asylum seriously? Like really, you don't have to be born yesterday to figure that one out!

What to do: Predictable fare, it's best watched with friends. And they'll probably hate you for dragging them to watch it. But hey, you can always say you were possessed. Right?
