Today, the judges announce the winner of the Man Booker Prize 2008. Whether the world and its cousin agree with the final choice made, no one will dispute that the Man Booker Prize is, well, a 'prize catch'.
Not only does it endow the author with an aura, for he joins a previous line of eminent Booker winners, but in the business sense the Booker has always given the winning work (and even the nominated one) 'a must-read' feel. Interestingly, 2008 marks the 40th anniversary of the Booker Prize.
Amitav Ghosh and Aravind Adiga have made it to the shortlist. Veteran author Amitav has been shortlisted for his work Sea of Poppies (the first of his trilogy), while debutant novelist Aravind has made it for his novel The White Tiger.
Also in the running are Steve Toltz (A Fraction of the Whole), Philip Hensher (The Northern Clemency), Sebastian Barry (The Secret Scripture) and Linda Grant (The Clothes on Their Backs).
