This was a sight that many would have paid to check out. This year’s National Award winner for best actor, Tamil star Dhanush, addressed his fans in Kannada. The fans were taken aback, but they couldn’t contain their happiness so they whistled continuously, as Dhanush began by addressing his appaji the late Dr Rajkumar.

“I wrote the speech for Dhanush,” says actor Ramya, who also added, “Dhanush was extremely nervous right after his speech, hoping that he hadn’t mispronounced anything or angered anyone.” But, contrary to Dhanush’s feeling, people quite liked the cheeky speech that Ramya had written.

When Dhanush honestly admitted, “I haven’t seen Sanju Weds Geetha,” people applauded, and they laughed along as he later said, “I just know this much that there is a Sanju and a Geetha and they want to get married.”

Dhanush also pledged his support and expressed gratitude to the people from Karnataka, as he said, “I had to make a speech in Kannada. After all, when you go someplace, the first thing you notice is the nativity, food and language. Also, my wife is from Karnataka, (Aishwarya is the daughter of Rajnikanth, who’s from Bangalore) so it is twice the reason for me to talk in Kannada.”

Towards the end of his speech, Ramya kind of had her revenge of sorts, as Dhanush said, “I don’t know a word of Kannada, but I have tried to talk the tongue. Reading out a Kannada speech from this piece of paper, I’ve realised how hard it must be for my heroines to dub in Tamil, when they come from other cities.”

Needless to say, this was one eventful evening, where people got more than their share of entertainment that they’d hoped for through this speech.
