Remember Private Emotions — the Ricky Martin song? The soothing and romantic second voice in the song was Swedish singer Meja. The singer has come a long way since then and has come out with several solo albums in various genres — from rock and jazz to electronica. Her album Mellow was a jazz one and her 2009 album Urban Gypsy in which she has focused on melody and lyrics has an electronica sound.
Meja is in India for the next three weeks and will perform and celebrate in Goa this New Year’s. Meja who twisted her ankle on arriving in India is still gung-ho about performing here. “I am carrying the twisted ankle from Sweden and twisted it again as soon as I arrived here but I’m excited about being here and want to make the most of it,” she says, adding, “it’s a different experience playing in front of crowds who don’t know your music well. They have no preconceived notions and their reactions are based on your performance and music at the concert.”
Moneybrother, who has won the Swedish Grammy Award for his debut album Blood Panic, is currently working on his second album. The artist creates a soul orientated blend of all the music styles he likes to listen to, making moods and details from genres like reggae, rock’n’roll and even disco.
This India tour is important to him to bring in more influences. “I like traditional Indian music. It has a soul. I will also try to catch the Sunburn Festival while I’m in Goa. These travels inspire my music,” he says.
There’s one thing common between the two — both of them are friends with Luke Kenny. The two met him when Kenny was in Stockholm recently for a music festival. “Luke is now my friend. I met him in Sweden. I might be collaborating with him and his band very soon,” says Moneybrother.
