A calendar, a star-studded walk and now a 'mastectomy line' - lingerie retailer Dalbir Bains is taking on breast cancer and how!
It would seem trivial--a lingerie line for women with breast cancer --in the larger scheme of things. But one of the biggest fallouts of mastectomy (surgery involving the removal of the breast) is the low self-esteem and the consequent depression its victims fall prey to. Add to it, the lack of support groups or post surgery counseling in India.Which is why, the launch of a mastectomy bra has come as a big relief to women dealing with this kind of cancer.
"If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer and have had surgery, you can disguise it to the outside world with a special bra. Whilst nothing can take away the pain and trauma of having breast surgery, at least the mastectomy bra can give you back your confidence and mental peace," says lingerie retailer Dalbir Bains.
Her store Boudoir London has just recently introduced German-made Anita--one of Europe's leading brands of breast cancer lingerie. Known as mastectomy bras, they are specially designed to enable the insertion of prosthesis (breast-shaped silicone piece) into the bra cup, therefore disguising the effect of any surgery, and giving the appearance of a normal bust. What's more, the variety of bras on offer is the same as the regular line.
"Our main aim is to ensure that women who've had a breast removed due to this cancer lead as normal a life as possible. Going to a lingerie shop and buying a bra shouldn't be a struggle for them. Also, once they've got this bra, they can wear any kind of clothing they want," adds Bains, revealing that the store plans to launch a mastectomy swimwear line too in the next few weeks.
Early this year, Bains, along with the British High Commission, initiated the launch of the Pink Charity Calendar, shot by photographer Subi Samuel. The calendar featuresShah Rukh Khan on the cover, followed by a host of other stars like Dia Mirza, Priyanka Chopra, Karan Johar and Deepika Padukone.
Bains is now planning a star-studded walk, where celebs will walk to different points of the city to raise breast cancer awareness. "Each celebrity will have to raise a sponsor and the proceeds of that will go to the Women's Cancer Initiative at Tata Memorial Hospital and other such organisations," she informs.
