The big Goan jamboree

Spin doctors of dance music come together in a compilation project to pay tribute to a club in Goa; talk of how the place influences them.

The big Goan jamboree

DJ Ryan along with Dj Ajit, Ivan, Tuhin, Whosane, Luke Brancaccio and Rebel Royal created a blast when they last played at the Goa’s Final Wave at Baga beach recently. The Sunburn Festival held in Goa every December too has been a boon for all the electronic dance music lovers.

Goa, without a doubt, has been the breeding ground for trance in the ’90s, a movement that has translated into the electronic dance music movement with loads of efforts from DJs from all over the country. The latest DJ compilation project the Tito’s Project, which has several DJs on it, is a sort of tribute to the popular club and the club scene in Goa.

DJ Ivan, DJ Whosane, Jalebee Cartel,  DJ Ryan Beck, TaTvA Kundalini, DJ Dragon Boyz, Deepnotic Agents, DJ Nawed (Submerge), DJ Rithesh Nayak (Submerge), DJ Rahul Vs Neilnash, DJ Shireen, DJ Sumith (Brain Drop) and others, are a part of the big project. All the artistes have done their original music for this project and all the tracks have been produced and created by the artistes themselves.

DJ Ryan, who has been on the DJ scene since he won the BMC championship in 1998, has loads of experience playing his trance music in Goa. “In Mumbai, it’s a lot more about Bollywood. Also, people are really demanding here. They don’t know what a request means. They want the DJ to play what they want to hear. In Goa, people are on a holiday and are relaxed. They are not very difficult to please. It lets you experiment a lot more too,” says Ryan, comparing Mumbai’s club scene with that of Goa.

Ryan, who is most popular for Safari Lounge and Freedom Spirit, says that it’s the best time to experiment. “Earlier I had to do what the record labels were telling me to do. Since the internet took over, the labels are not that strong anymore. So we earn our bread-butter from live gigs. And that’s the place where you get to experiment with your music,” says Ryan.
