Sufi comes to vogue

Iktara, the song from the movie Wake Up Sid is still  doing the rounds of several radio stations. Sufi-ghazal singer Kavita Seth who sung this song, recently released her new album digitally.

The album is titled Jaam-e-sufi.

The album has traditional Indian sounds and is poetic. Kavita took approximately two-and-half years to complete it entirely. “I believe, if you listen to your own song repeatedly over a time, you can find a lot of mistakes. Thus, you have scope to make it even better in the end. I took about six to eight months to complete each track,” she says.

Her other songs including Mujhe Mat Roko from Gangster, Maula from the film Vaada and the upcoming Mora Piya Mohse Bolat Nahin from Rajneeti are quite popular with the youth.

Though Sufi music sounds very traditional, what makes it such a favourite? “Sufi music has the ability to touch the soul. It touches you at a deep level and thus people like it. Mujhe sufi music ka passion tha, magar logon ne ise aaj fashion bana diya hai,” says Kavita.

Many songs in the Hindi film industry today just come and go.

When asked to explain what she feels about this, she points out, “The pen and the poetry is the most important thing in a song. If the lyrics are meaningful then they are remembered over years.”

For the love of Sufi music, she has formed a group called Karwaan which invites like-minded Sufi singers to be a part of the same. It makes her happy that audiences are enthralled with her melodious voice in other countries as well, including London, Birmingham, Scotland, Berlin and Oslo.
