Sunando Mitra, director of the upcoming Hindi movie Idiot Box' which had a run-in with the censor board for having a character named Anekta Kapoor and production house called Lalaji Telefilms, says his movie is not targeting the TV czarina Ekta Kapoor.
"Idiot Box is a take in lighter vein on the contemporary tube world. Come what may it was not possible to forget Ekta Kapoor's contribution to the TV industry while making a movie on it," Sunando Mitra told PTI from Kolkata. "However, we are not targeting her. I am sure if Ekta watches the movie, even she would have a good laugh," he said.
Idiot Box depicts the struggle of creative head Subhrojeet Chakraborty to lift the sagging TRPs of a daily soap Kabhi Yeh Kabhi Woh, from the production house of Anekta Kapoor for Moon TV channel. How he does it forms the crux of the story.
The movie starring Sushant Singh and Hrishita Bhatt among others, is scheduled for a March 19 release after getting a clearance from the censor board.
The censor board, Sunando said, had objected to the use of surname Kapoor and Lalaji in the movie. The cuts were totally unacceptable to us. So we went to the Revising Committee. After much deliberations the movie was cleared with names intact, he added.
38 year old debutante director Sunando, who has earlier worked as assistant for filmmakers like Bhupen Hazarika and Kalpana Lajmi, said he got the inspiration of the movie from his mother-in-law.
"Though not much of a couch potato myself, I used to see that my family, especially my mother-in-law was an avid watcher of all television serials. She was completely hooked to the serials. She used to look forward to the twists and turns. That is how I decided to make a movie on television industry," Sunando said. "I have just shown how Ekta has transformed the television industry and how it functions. I have tried to blend daily chores with the industry as background giving rise to comic situations," he added.
Sunando, who has earlier made mini series for DD and Zee, said his second movie is in Bengali. "It is titled Ogobodhu Fundori (My Darling Wife) and stars singer Babul Supriyo in the lead. It is slightly based on Uttam Kumar's last movie," he added.
