Spoof cinema is the new entrant at IFFI

The Indian International Film Festival (IFFI) that kick starts from November 23 in Goa, will for the first time showcase 'Spoof Cinema', a genre that mocks popular movies.

"Spoof Cinema that mocks popular cinema is the new entrant in the 40th edition of the festival. Films such as Malegaon ka Superman and Gabbarbhai MBBS are part of this package," director of film festivals, SM Khan told reporters here.

During the ten-day festival, 200 films from India and abroad are to be showcased and the small budget movies will find a place in the repertoire, he said adding that there is need to promote such ventures.

"In a departure from previous years, we will have a best director and best film award this year. The latter will be jointly shared by both the director and the producer of the film," Khan said. The winner gets the prestigious Golden Peacock award and Rs40 lakh as cash prize.The best director and the winner of the Special Jury Award will get silver peacock and cash prizes of Rs15 lakh each, he said.

"The international entries to IFFI 2009 will be screened under categories like 'Cinema of the World' with Africa and Latin America being the continents in focus ans also special emphasis on cinema from countries like Poland, Italy, Spain, France," Khan said.

All Asian countries have a strong showing but there isn't a single entry from Pakistan, he said. IFFI will pay tribute to Indian film personalitie including Neelu Phule, Prakash Mehra, Shakti Samanta, Feroz Khan, Leela Naidu among others, who passed away last year, by showing their movies.

Documentaries will also be shown on Indian music and musicians like Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Jasraj, Naushad, KL Saigal, Begum Akhtar and Mohammad Rafi, Khan said.

"Among the parallel activities, Choreographer Shiamak Davar will present a lecture demonstration on 'Evolution of Dance in Hindi Cinema' while Kishwar Desai will speak on 'Hindi Films based on book adaptations," Khan added.

On security issues, Khan said, "Tight security arrangements are being made by the Goa Police with the help of the Central forces to ensure safety and security of the venue, delegates and other things."
