Have you ever had the uplifting experience of connecting to a sound vibration either in a melodic song or in a spiritual chant and feeling as if part of you had been transported to heaven? Sounds can have wonderful healing results on the human psyche as the experts acknowledge.
Singer Pankaj Udhas feels that the common experience of people having gooseflesh when they hear a particular song — either vocal or instrumental — is tribute to the power of melodic sound. “Music can have a transcendental effect on the psyche and transcend barriers not just of language and culture but between human beings and animals as well,” says Udhas. He cites the example of his
German Shepherd dog who whenever he is doing his daily riyaaz comes and sits quietly at his side, enraptured by the sound vibrations. Adds Udhas, “When I listen to some of the spiritual albums that I have sung, I experience a drop in blood pressure and a feeling of calmness.”
Says singer Talat Aziz, “Even sounds that are not musical can have superb therapeutic effects. When I say my daily prayers in a certain pitch the sound vibrations light up the whole room after a while. It has been scientifically proven that a certain melodic structure positively affects brain activity. Soft sounds help bring about tranquillity in the psyche.”
Actor Shenaz Treasuryvala finds that over and above everything else, the sounds of nature —such as the sea, reduces her stress levels the most. Among spiritual sounds, Shenaz connects most to her Parsi prayers recited in Avesta, an ancient language. She says, “Just the sound of the prayers brings a calm, meditative feeling.”
