Soul Feet makes you shake, rattle and roll

A group of around 60 dancers will take to the stage to demonstrate the origin of dance through movements in India, which arose through dancing in the temple and went on to get its current form with western influences.

Trained and led by dancer-choreographer Parijat Naik, Soul Feet will see varied dance forms come to the fore. “The concept is to take the audiences through a whole journey of dance in India. From the pre-historic dance which came from daily movements that were set to a rhythm to how dance started in temples and during times of Devdasis,” says Parijat.

The dances will then move to Indian classical dance and dancing in courts. “Then of course during the British times, western influences came in — ballroom dancing, etc. Once the Indian film industry arrived, various dance forms were used. Then we move on to Bollywood dance forms which have a lot of hip hop movements these days,” says Parijat who has previously been an assistant on 'Nach Baliye 3'.

The troupe is set to perform  soon and Parijat will do Indian classical and Bollywood portions. “Shows like Dance India Dance have inspired many people to take up dancing. The number of students coming to me has increased over the past one year,” she says adding, “TV shows also give choreographers and dancers a big boost.”

Catch the troupe perform on December 27 at the Yashwantrao Chavan Auditorium.
