Soha Ali Khan who’s been rather unpredictable with her choice of films — oscillating between mainstream commercial fare to the t cinema — has revealed the real reason for doing Deepa Mehta’s upcoming film.
The actress who will be seen sharing screen space with newbie Satya Bhaba in Midnight’s Children — the big screen adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s novel by the same name — says that besides working with Deepa, the draw was the book itself. Soha recently said that she always wanted to be a part of Midnight’s Children.
“I had made up my mind that I wanted to be a part of this film in any capacity even when I didn’t know what Deepa would offer me,” says Soha. Interestingly, the part that Deepa offered her to play — the role of Saleem Sinai’s (Satya) sister, Jamila — happens to be one of her favourite characters from her favourite book.
Talking about it, she shares, “I was quite happy that I got to play a part that I really liked. I was very happy, I thought, ‘Oh that’s great’ because she is young and she’s beautiful! Then of course she sings and dances a lot.”
About the book, Soha adds, “It’s been one of my all time favourite book. I have always found Midnight’s Children very intriguing. There is a backdrop of India-Pakistan conflict, the fragmentation of the country and the problems within the ruling party of the time. It’s a clever book and the parallels drawn between Saleem’s life and state of the country are brilliant.”
