Just five years into the profession, Toto Nandy, 28, has shot for 18 mainstream Hindi films. . Toto is a professional photographer who documents stars and actors while they are shooting on the sets of an ongoing filmIf you noticed some of the cover shots for posters of recent films such as Dev D, No Smoking, Gulaal and Aamir, then you must know that, all of them have been shot by Toto. His latest work is the new release Love Aaj Kal.
His interest lies in capturing people in their own flavour but he also does landscape photography on and off. “While shooting for films, the greatest challenge is to bring the true character of an actor to the role he is playing. So I try my best to know the actors by spending time with them and to understand the requirement of the script,” says Toto. He recently did a portfolio shoot of Kalki Koechlin. “Kalki is the type of person who is very funky, outgoing and lively. Her looks can merge anytime, anywhere. Because I know her I was able to bring out the best from her in my pictures,” he says.
When asked about any one of his favourite shots, he guns for No Smoking. “Although the movie wasn’t much of a favourite among the audiences, I really love the cover picture. It shows John kissing Ayesha Takia while smoke still coming out of his lips. The concept was given by my friend Rahul Nanda (a poster designer) and I think it perfectly conveyed the message of the movie to the audience in first glance.”
You may not know, but Toto is also the official pictographer for Anurag Kashyap and Imtiaz Ali. Other than this he does shoots for advertising agencies as well. Couple of his upcoming movies include Zokkomon for Walt Disney India and Quick Gun Murugun for Folk Star.
